THE CHALLENGE

Costain is delivering the A1 Birtley to Coalhouse improvement scheme, which includes widening the A1 and replacing a bridge structure over the East Coast Mainline. To progress this major upgrade, the Allerdene Burn watercourse needed to be safely diverted, all within a severely restricted working area bordered by the live railway, the A1 embankment and the existing burn. Strict temporary works requirements and a tight 24-week programme added further complexity.

OUR SOLUTION

Applebridge provided an integrated delivery model, utilising expertise from across the Applebridge Family to undertake earthworks, drainage, civils and reinforced concrete works. Early engagement allowed us to collaboratively develop practical design solutions that addressed the site constraints. This included using height-restricted machinery beneath the bridge and implementing extensive temporary works to allow multiple trades to operate safely.

SCOPE OF WORKS

Applebridge was appointed to complete the following packages of works:

• Culvert diversion
• Reinforced concrete works
• Sheet-pile wing walls
• Underground drainage
• Concrete channels and troughs
• Fall-prevention fencing
• Earthworks
• Grouting of previous culvert

THE RESULTS

Applebridge sucessfully completed the works ahead of programme, supporting the successful delivery of one of the most technically challenging elements of the A1 upgrade.
