SeAH Monopile Factory

We are thrilled to announce that Applebridge Construction has been appointed to deliver the phase 3 concrete slab works for SeAH Wind’s monopile factory at Teesworks, a landmark project valued at £22 million. This critical phase of construction is set for completion within an ambitious 26-week timeframe.

As a North East and Yorkshire-based civil engineering contractor, we are honoured to be entrusted by K2 Construction Management with the task of constructing over 40,000m3 of concrete slabs and the installation of more than 10,000 tonnes of steel for SeAH’s mammoth facility. This appointment comes off the back of Applebridge’s successful work on the project’s earthworks, enabling, and drainage.

The project will see an accelerated programme of works, with Applebridge deploying day and night work gangs to ensure round-the-clock progress. This intensive effort underscores the project’s significance in bolstering the UK’s capabilities in renewable energy production, with the SeAH monopile factory set to play a pivotal role in the foundations of offshore wind turbines.

Situated on the Teesworks site, the £450 million factory development will stand at 40 metres tall, covering an area of 1.13 million sqft. It represents a monumental stride towards enhancing the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure, with the facility expected to generate 2,250 jobs in the local supply chain.

SeAH Wind’s monopile factory is not just a testament to the UK’s commitment to renewable energy but also to the prowess of Applebridge’s construction capabilities. Our expertise in managing complex, high-value projects under tight schedules is set to ensure the successful and timely completion of this critical infrastructure.

Chris Brown, Applebridge Managing Director expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with K2 Construction Management on this groundbreaking project. Our commitment to delivering excellence and our proven track record on large-scale projects positions us uniquely to undertake the construction of SeAH Wind’s monopile factory’s concrete works. This project not only signifies a milestone in our journey but also in the UK’s journey towards a sustainable future.”

SeAH Wind’s monopile factory at Teesworks is a beacon of progress in the UK’s renewable energy landscape, promising to enhance the nation’s competitive edge in the global market. Applebridge’s role in this transformative project marks a significant chapter in the UK’s construction and energy sectors, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

Now a full-time Applebridge employee, Jack Hall is the first of Applebridge’s Academy apprentices to have successfully completed the recently established apprenticeship standard.

Approved for Bricklaying in 2018, the new standard is starting to see its first cohort of apprentices take on the assessment (with courses taking 2-4 years to complete).  The Standard was introduced as part of the Government’s major apprenticeship reforms and represents a shift from assessing to learning placing employers in control.

The standards include a variety of changes to the original SASE framework such as 20% off-the-job training, progress weighting and end-point assessment (EPA).

The end-point-assessment represents a critical new stage to the apprenticeship and consists of;

Skills knowledge test – which includes 60 minutes multiple-choice test consisting of 40 questions based on the knowledge apprentices have gained.

Practical Skills test – A 12-hour timed test that requires apprentices to complete a task by following an approved drawing, schedule and using other information such as risk assessments, method statements etc, and includes 20 minutes of questioning.

Oral Questioning – underpinned by Portfolio evidence: a 35-minute question and answer session, based on the skills and behaviours.

For Apprenticeships in Bricklaying the standard is still in its infancy, and is setting the bar high. With low pass rates across the UK it can be considered a great achievement for both Jack and the Academy,  Applebridge Academy Manager Greg Chapman comments:

“With the current 2020/21 apprenticeship achievement rates for standards sitting at only 51.8%, this is a fantastic achievement from Jack.  Jack has done an amazing job throughout his apprenticeship.”

With the construction sector continuing to struggle to attract new talent, the success of both Jack and the Academy is a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to finding, nurturing, and developing the best new construction talent in the region, moulding the next generation of construction.

“We are proud of Jack’s commitment to the apprenticeship, and it was only natural for us to offer him a full-time position with Applebridge construction upon the conclusion of his apprenticeship. The Academy apprenticeship route continues to be an ideal way to introduce new talent into Applebridge, with many of our new starters going through the Apprenticeship route, it is an area in which we are finding essential to Applebridge’s growth and we are committed to investing and developing the Academy along this path. ”  Applebridge Group Operations Director – Andy Ray

Northern construction group the Applebridge Family have given eighteen trainees and five trade apprentices the chance to ‘engineer the foundations of tomorrow, today’, by enrolling them onto bespoke training programmes and further education courses, across the North-East and Yorkshire.

The Applebridge Family works closely with multiple colleges and universities across Teesside, Newcastle, Durham and Yorkshire, creating tailored training programmes for trainees joining the businesses.

With an ageing workforce and skills gap within the construction, Applebridge feels the responsibility lies within the industry to create opportunities and to educate the next generation of workers.

The Applebridge Family recently teamed up with Hartlepool College of Further Education to offer six trainees a chance of a career in Construction.

The Applebridge students will work towards a Level 3 Diploma in the Construction and the Built Environment, the equivalent to two A-levels, and will cover a variety of topics such as project management, health and safety, construction technology and building technology, to enable them to become civil engineers, site managers and quantity surveyors.

Hartlepool College’s Head of Construction and the Built Environment, John Cartwright said: “The partnership with Applebridge will help to transform lives, as we look to get these apprentices on the road to construction management.

“It is a three-year course, and this is the biggest employer partnership the college has developed within construction.

Andy Ray, Construction Director of Applebridge, with members of Hartlepool College and some of the 2020/21 cohort of trainees.

During their course, each trainee will rotate within the business, gaining experience in multiple disciplines, both on site and in the office, creating a well-rounded construction experience. On completion of the course, each trainee will be placed in their favoured sector of the business, to further build upon their knowledge and skillset and to proudly follow the company culture, ethos, and work ethic.

Construction Director of Applebridge Construction, Andy Ray who works closely with colleges and trainees to design the bespoke training programmes, had this to say:

“We are delighted to welcome our latest cohort of trainees and apprentices into the business and look forward to seeing them develop over the coming months and years. Our latest management training programme builds on the success of previous years’ schemes where we have been proud to see our apprentices and graduates rise to the challenge and become essential members of the team.”

The Applebridge Family also has trainees enrolled onto Construction and Built environment courses at New College Durham and Sheffield College.

Education is extremely important to Applebridge, with a further eight employees enrolled onto further education courses, in a range of disciplines, including Accountancy, Quantity Surveying and Civil Engineering, at Northumbria University, Leeds Beckett University and Caplan Financial, Newcastle.

Covid-19 has caused a dip in the opportunities available for young people, however these training programmes can help to provide tomorrow’s workers a chance of a career in construction.

Additionally, The Applebridge Family invests heavily in trade apprentices, with five trainees currently enrolled onto Groundworks, Joinery, Plant Machinery and Bricklaying courses.

The Applebridge Family is made up of seven construction companies: ZTL, AD Plant, Applebridge Construction, Applebridge Building Services, Geocast, Retaining UK and Tarcon.

Applebridge is ‘engineering the foundations of tomorrow, today.’

We are so pleased to announce that 3,760 people across Teesside enjoyed hot, cooked meals, in the first week of our free-school meals initiative, in partnership with the MFC Foundation and Middlesbrough FC.

Children, families and communities across the region, were amongst those who benefited from the freshly made meals; prepped and cooked by the talented chefs at MFC’s Riverside Stadium.

Applebridge were inspired by the fantastic work of footballer turned hero Marcus Rashford, who lobbied the government to provide 1.3 million free-school meals for children over the summer holidays.

Community is at the heart of the Applebridge family and by creating a successful partnership with the Middlesbrough Foundation, we can ensure that together families across Teesside feel supported.

‘Applebridge are proud to step up to the plate and serve their community.’
