Caddick required a new Section 278 roundabout to form the primary access route to a major new distribution warehouse development for Amazon. The works were located on the busy Queen Elizabeth Way, a live highway carrying high volumes of northbound and southbound traffic, with a key cycleway and footpath running directly through the site. The challenge was to deliver critical highway infrastructure safely, while maintaining traffic flow, pedestrian and cyclist access, and meeting programme constraints.
OUR SOLUTION
Applebridge adopted a collaborative, safety-led approach from the outset. Early engagement with the client, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and street works teams enabled the development of a robust phasing and traffic management strategy. Careful sequencing allowed works to progress while keeping the road operational during peak periods. Pedestrian and cyclist safety was prioritised through segregated routes and controlled access points, ensuring uninterrupted movement through the site.
SCOPE OF WORKS
Applebridge was appointed to complete the following packages of works:
Construction of a Section 278 roundabout
Earthworks and formation of the central reservation
Traffic management on a live highway
Management and protection of cycleway and footpath
Coordination of material deliveries and vehicle movements
THE RESULTS
Despite the complexities of working on a live road, the project has progressed safely and efficiently. A strong early push enabled the bulk earthworks to be completed ahead of adverse winter weather, protecting programme certainty. Subsequent phases are continuing through 2026, with works progressing in line with the agreed phasing plan. The scheme will deliver a safe, efficient access route supporting the long-term operation of this strategically important logistics development.
